Carol Vernon

December 24, 1930 — October 19, 2014

Surrounded by family at home, Carol Barbara Vernon passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, after a year-long courageous battle with non-smokers' lung cancer. She was born Dec. 24, 1930, in Salem, Ore., to Nellie C. and Milton A. Marcy, D.D. She attended elementary school in Portland prior to graduating from Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash., in 1948. Going on to college at Washington State University where she was an Alpha Chi Omega, she met Al Vernon; they married and enjoyed 64 years together. After two years in El Paso, they returned to the Northwest, where she was a wonderful mother and homemaker to their three children: Shalline E. Chism (Chuck) of Waldport; Scott M. Vernon (Diane) of Beaverton; and Gayle H. Seely (David) of Seaside. She enjoyed being a grandmother to Stephanie Vernon and Allison Garcia (Ryan) of Beaverton, and a great-grandmother to Layla A. Garcia of Beaverton. She was predeceased by her four siblings; Carl Marcy, Don Marcy, Helen Marcy and Bernice Yost. While her three children were attending Oregon State University, she supported them with tuition by working at the Beaverton School District as a cook and later as a secretary to the principal. In 1980, Carol and Al moved to Gearhart, where she joined the Chapter CR of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, volunteered at Gearhart Elementary School and the Seaside Chamber of Commerce. In her leisure time, she enjoyed gardening, traveling (to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii and around Oregon) and outdoor activities (skiing, snowshoeing and beach walks). We are grateful for the loving care she received from Providence Seaside Hospital and Dr. Nicholas Barber. The family is honoring her request that there be no service. Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Seaside Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers. Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Seaside is in charge of arrangements.
