Edward Childs Morgan

September 13, 1939 — July 13, 2016

Edward Childs Morgan, a retired teacher, died July 13, 2016 in Astoria, Oregon. He was 76. Born on Sept. 13, 1939 in New Haven, CT and the son of the Rev. Edward and Marcia Morgan, Ed grew up in the village of Nichols in the town of Trumbull, CT. He attended St. Thomas Choir School in New York City as a boy soprano and graduated from Stratford High School in CT. Ed received his teaching degree from Southern Connecticut State University, a master's in education from University of Bridgeport, and reading specialist certification from University of Pennsylvania. As a Bristol Township middle school teacher for the majority of his 38 years in education, he encouraged students to read anything - from comic books to the classics. Ed was also very active with the teachers' union. As a life-long Democrat and active in local politics, Ed served in elected positions on the Yardley Borough Council and Yardley Sewer Authority. He also started the first Yardley Recreation Board and began many community activities including Memorial Day parade bike decorating contest, egg hunt, Halloween costume contest, movie night, and some of these activities still continue to this day. Ed also designed and launched the epic bumper sticker "Warning: I Brake for Ducks in Yardley." Ed was an avid philatelist, particularly with a collection of Pitcairn Islands stamps. A dedicated fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants, Ed regularly taunted his Red Sox friends and was known for his quick wit with many corny jokes and puns. Ed enjoyed taking his dogs to the dog park and participating in pet therapy programs. During his time in SC, Ed liked being a member of the weekly DL group. As a master swimmer, Ed "the Farmer" was active with the SCSU swim team and liked competing and cheering for others at swim meets. He received the Hutchinson Award as recognition for his commitment to the SCSU team. While in Sea Girt, NJ, Ed swam at the Atlantic Club where he also worked as a lifeguard after retiring from teaching. Ed was remembered as a devoted husband and father who always gave back to the community. Ed and his wife enjoyed their lives together, including all of the communities they lived: Bridgeport, CT; Yardley, PA; Sea Girt, NJ; Pawley's Island, SC, and Astoria, OR. He will be remembered for the famous "First of February" parties which brought friends from all over to sample his chili. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Deborah Morgan; his children, Cindy Watson, Sallie Dekutowski and her husband John, and Eddie Morgan and Burn Vianney; nine grandchildren; four siblings, Marcia, King, Sallie and Margaret; many nieces and nephews; and his dogs, Tank and Jeep. At Ed's request, no services are planned. Memorials may be made to the Southern Connecticut State University Swim Team, Attn: Coach Tim Quill, 125 Wintergreen Avenue, New Haven, CT 06515; the St. Thomas Choir School, 202 West 58th St., New York, NY 10019-1406; or the charity of your choice.
