Helen Rose Marie Sodervick

March 15, 1931 — September 5, 2013

Helen Rose Marie Sodervick, 82, of Warrenton, went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 5, 2013, in Astoria, surrounded by family. Helen was born on March 15, 1931, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Mae Rhoades and Lawrence Anderson, who at that time were married.
Helen had four siblings, but her youngest brother, Artie Roy, passed on as a young child. Helen attended schools in both Minnesota and in Warrenton.
Helen married Arthur (Art) Jack Raymond Sodervick, and after residing in both Warrenton and Gearhart, Helen and Art settled their family in a country home in the Lewis and Clark area of Astoria in 1964, where they finished raising their seven children. He preceded her in death in 2008.
Helen will always be remembered as a very loving and giving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Helen cherished her family, and loved spending time with them in person, visiting over the phone, and communicating through cards and letters.
She also enjoyed a wide range of simple pleasures including family picnics and get-togethers, cheering during family lawn dart games, reading, watching movies and her favorite television shows, music, dancing, spending time outdoors especially on the swings at her country home, and in later years working crossword puzzles and other word games such as playing "Hangman," which she frequently did with her son, Dave.
Helen is survived by her children: son Raymond Sodervick of Warrenton; daughter and son-in-law Jeannie and Gary Ball of Newport; son John Sodervick of Fernwood, Idaho; son Bob Sodervick of San Francisco, California; son David Sodervick of Astoria; daughter Margie Merritt of Woodburn; and daughter and son-in-law Karen and John Layton of Warrenton. Her son-in-law David Merritt preceded her in death in 2009. She is also survived by her four grandchildren Joshua, Kristen, Daniel, and Jessica; three great-grandchildren Jordin, Sienna, and Phaira; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Helen Mattson, brother Dick Mattson, sister Judy Mattson, numerous beloved extended family members, including Helen Salli of Cloquet, Minnesota, and several of her childrens pets, whom she affectionately deemed her "grandpets."
A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at the Chapel at Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Astoria on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, followed by interment at the Lewis and Clark Cemetery and a reception at Hughes-Ransom.
