Margaret Lillian "Marg" Miller, 89, of Seaside, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, in Seaside.
She was born July 29, 1923, in Mill Ranch, Wash., to Martin and Emma (Peronto) Nielsen.
In 1941, she graduated from Star of the Sea High School; in 1943, she graduated from St. Marys School of Nursing in Astoria. She earned a scholarship in music but gave it to a friend so she could attend nursing school.
On Nov. 24, 1950, she married Harry Acton Miller in Astoria. He survives, residing in Seaside.
She was asked by the U.S. Army to enlist as a second lieutenant during World War II, but she declined, wanting to stay in Clatsop County.
Mrs. Miller was a registered nurse for 41 years. She served as a nurses supervisor until Sisters of Providence took over in Seaside. She retired in 1985.
She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and the American Legion, and was a past president of the Eagles.
Family members said she loved to travel and enjoyed knitting and crocheting, sewing, cooking and baking and jigsaw puzzles. She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed crossword puzzles, and piano and organ. She bowled, and won a state championship in doubles. She won second place in a national cooking contest, and was given a new electric stove. She loved pinochle, and played with the same group of eight women for 20-plus years, meeting every Wednesday.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Nancy L. Maplethorpe of Salem and Sylvia J. Herrley of Troutdale; two sons, Harry A. Miller Jr. of Kasilof, Alaska, and Paul A. Miller of Seaside; four nephews, Dan Hess and his wife, Carol, of Astoria, David Hess and his wife, Yvette, of Kennewick, Wash., Dale Hess of Tucson, Ariz., and Larry Nielsen and his wife, Norma, of Bremerton, Wash.; four nieces, Carol Renkema and her husband, John, of Camp Verde, Ariz., Adrienne ONiell of Torrence, Calif., Pat Volk and her husband, Ted, of Grants Pass, and Donna Charlin and her husband, Ron, of Littleton, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Betty Nielsen of Astoria; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Hartill; two brothers, Lawrence and Jim Nielsen; and a nephew, Jim Hess.
A memorial will be held Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the American Legion, 1315 Broadway, Seaside OR.
