Robert (Bob) Chopping of Astoria passed away August 21, 2013. He was 88.
Bob was born April 29, 1925, in Eagleville, California. He was raised in a foster home in San Jose. He graduated from San Jose High School and joined the Maritime Service, graduating from the Maritime Academy in San Mateo. He served in the Pacific during WWII as a Merchant Marine.
He met his wife Margaret in Santa Cruz, and they married in Lincoln City 65 years ago. He went to work for KBCH in Lincoln City, and later managed KOOS in Coos Bay, before coming to KAST in 1960. He later purchased KOHU in Hermiston.
He was active in civic affairs and served as Mayor of Astoria for 8 years. He was president of the Oregon Association of Broadcasters, Astoria Chamber of Commerce and Astoria Rotary Club, and a Trustee for the Astoria Elks Lodge #180. He was a docent at the Maritime Museum and enjoyed giving tours for visiting cruise ships and acting as a conductor for the Astoria Trolley. He was proud that when he decided not to run for Mayor again, that he left the city in great financial shape with money in the bank.
His only son Gerry preceded him in death, plus two brothers Gene and Lester Chopping of California. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Mickie), his daughter-in-law, Lynn Chopping; nephews, Ken Chopping, Fred and his wife Cheryl Chopping; nieces, Kay Dunnegan, Cleo Paine and Gloria Turner and his granddaughter Jennifer Rodgers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
Funeral service will be held Monday August 26, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Ransom Chapel in Astoria. Committal will follow at Ocean View Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the Astoria Elks Lodge 453 11th Street Astoria.
