Twilla Dawn McElmurry

April 25, 1972 — April 29, 2021

Twilla Dawn McElmurry, age 49, of Hammond, Oregon passed away at her home on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

As a child Twilla developed a passion for medicine and science that never dwindled. She graduated from Moses Lake High School with honors and went on to receive her BS in Natural Science with an emphasis in Human Biology. She then completed her Clinical Laboratory Science Degree.

While in college, Twilla was so dedicated to the work that she and a partner suggested and developed a protocol on hair for forensic drug testing using the shaft vs. the follicle. This allows for alternative testing if follicle hair particles are not available. Twilla and her classmate were published which led to an alternate protocol being used by forensic scientists when follicles are not available.

Twilla was an active member of the Astoria Church of Christ. She was the Laboratory Manager at Columbia Memorial Hospital for many years and absolutely loved her career. She often volunteered and served the community with pride.

Over the years Twilla made a point to travel as much as possible. She went on several medical mission trips to Ecuador. As well as traveling to see the world and embrace the different cultures. She went to Africa, Asia, and Europe along with other little stops on her journey. She always made the best of every trip and layover seeing as much as possible.

Twilla was a thrill seeker and made sure her life was full of adventure. She was involved in martial arts. She went snorkeling in the Galapagos, bungee jumping and even skydiving. Twilla loved listening to music and trivia nights. Jeopardy was her favorite show until the very end. She also knew how to relax. She and her mother Linda went on two Alaskan cruises together.

Twilla was an incredible woman with friends and family spread all around. She was hilarious, honest, entertaining, generous, diligent, and stubborn. She loved to have murder mystery dinners and go to the theatre. She could make you blush and laugh until your stomach hurt, but in the same visit explain something complex with ease. She was truly a one of a kind person that made a big impact on this world and will be dearly missed.

Preceded in death by her father Boyd as well as all of her grandparents, several uncles, aunts and cousins. She is survived by her mother Linda McElmurry, sister Tyha Murphy (Chad), sister Jennifer Campos (Alex); and numerous nieces, nephews, nibling, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers the family would like you to donate to a charity of your choice in honor of Twilla.

Hughes-Ransom Mortuaries & Crematory have taken care of all of the arrangements. Service information will come at a later date and family and friends will be notified.

Thank you,
Tyha Murphy and Linda McElmurry
