George Hays Ross Jr.

April 1, 1932 — August 3, 2012

Former Gearhart resident, George H. Ross Jr. 80, was born in Portland to George H. and Muriel Houck, George attended Grant H.S. (1950). He went to U. of O. and Portland State University. George served his country in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne, as a Sergeant/Paratrooper completing his service 1955, returning to Portland to work for HFC financial. But his true calling was as Dr. Zoom- host of a children's television show for KPTV Channel 12 from 1962 to 1969. Many people remember his zany skits, rapier wit and dry sense of humor as Dr. Zoom. George remained with KPTV Channel 12 for over 25 years as an advertising sales representative, retiring in 1996. George then moved to Gearhart and worked as the local fixture at Pacific Way Restaurant, which culminated in a stool dedicated to George with his name on it. George enjoyed collecting art and sculptures, studying older cultures and fishing. His sense of humor and debate skills will be missed. His family and friends will always love and respect him. George is survived by daughters, Suzy Rask and Krista Smith; sons, George Ross III and John Ross; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Celebration of life, was held August. 15 at Portland Memorial. George will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery.
