Herbert Wayne Schlappi

March 23, 1922 — May 13, 2013

Herb Schlappi, a longtime resident of Seaside, died Monday, May 13, at the age of 91. He finally lost the battle to an array of ailments, including cancer and a stroke. A funeral will be held at the Seaside United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the IOOF cemetery in Tillamook.
Herb was born March 23, 1922, to Herman and Clara Schlappi, who owned a dairy farm in Tillamook. He was one of five children. Herb earned his way through college by working in the summer in the dairy industry. He attended Oregon College of Education, and joined the military service during his senior year. He spent much of his World War II service time as a telegraph operator in Greenland. Prior to leaving the states, he married Jean Pesheck at Scott Airfield Base in Illinois in 1944. He received his teaching degree upon returning from WW II, and later obtained a masters degree at the University of Oregon.
Herb moved to Seaside in 1946, and served as both a teacher and principal at Central Elementary School. He later spent most of his career as a science and math teacher at Broadway Junior High School in Seaside. Herb was an active member of both the United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club, as well as being an avid bowler, pinochle player, and horseshoe champion.
Jean passed away in 2001, but Herb is survived by two brothers (Herman Schlappi and wife Kathy of Tillamook, and Arnold Schlappi and wife Dixie of Ridgefield), and four children (Linda Raitanen and husband Pete of Ketchikan, Joanne Bowyer of Netarts, Wayne Schlappi and wife Maria Moroney of Seattle, and Ralph Schlappi and wife Rae of Redmond), along with seven grandchildren (Kristin, Kyle, Eric, Erin, Allison, Vincent, Natalie) and eight great-grandchildren (Grant, Lauren, Conner, Cameron, Griffin, Paige, Addison, Anna).
The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Seaside United Methodist Church, 241 N. Holladay Drive
