Janice "Jan" Miller

October 26, 1944 — October 19, 2013

Janice "Jan" Miller, passed away peacefully in her home on October 19th, 2013 surrounded by family and an abundance of love. She was born in Evansville, Indiana on October 26, 1944, to Thelma and Jacob Hopkins. She spent her early years living on her grandparents farm in Wichita Falls, Texas. Her family traveled with her Air Force dad, settling for a time in Aurora Colorado where she met and married her high school sweetheart of more than 50 years Richard Miller. They began their life journey together in Colorado and moved their way further west to Idaho and finally reached Astoria where they settled, raised a family, and became part of the community for forty plus years. Even though Jan settled far from Texas, she always carried a bit of that southern charm with her and used it astutely her whole life. Jan was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Her heart was always big, she had a generous spirit and her sense of humor to those who knew her was nothing short of candid and often lively! She worked tirelessly to support her husband and raise her children. She could always be seen at Boy Scout fund raisers or cheering on her sons at basketball or running events. Jans since of pride in her family was immeasurable. She worked for years at Anchor Graphics and later at the Eagles and American Legion in Astoria and was a friend to many. She was a huge supporter of the philanthropic arm of the Eagles and cast a wide net of people she called friends. Her love of flowers and also Pepsi endured to her end, always making for some sort of conversation piece. Her mother once noted she thought her children would be born in the shape of a Pepsi bottle. She is survived by her husband Richard, their youngest son Curtis and his wife Katie, and children Luke and Finn and their older son Robert and his wife Amy and children Robyn and Nolan; her youngest sister Debbie and husband Bill, and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Thelma and Jacob Hopkins and her sister Pam. Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
