Ronald Lee Atkins, 81, of Warrenton, Oregon, passed away after a long and courageous journey with his health.

Ron was born on October 25, 1944, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Ervin Atkins and Mildred Evanger Atkins. His family later made their home in Oregon, where Ron graduated from Warrenton High School in 1962.

On October 22, 1966, Ron married Sharon Rogers in Du Quoin, Illinois. Together they built a life in Warrenton, raising their sons, Eric and Todd, and sharing nearly 60 years of marriage.

Throughout his working years, Ron wore many hats. He worked in the grocery business, worked as a longshoreman for the Port of Astoria and served his community as a police officer with the Warrenton and Astoria police departments, and served with the Oregon National Guard at Camp Rilea. He retired in 2008 after a lifetime of hard work and service.

Ron was also active in the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, where he held leadership roles and enjoyed the friendships and sense of community those organizations brought into his life.

Outside of work, Ron loved the outdoors. Some of his happiest times were spent bow hunting, salmon fishing and crabbing, working in his garden, and cutting firewood. He also made sure his boys shared in his interests, getting Eric and Todd involved with motorcycles and spending countless hours riding and making memories together. Ron also shared his early interest in computers with Eric, something that became another special connection between father and son.

Ron was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His family will remember his strength, determination, independence, sense of humor, and the many lessons and memories he leaves behind.

Ron is survived by his wife, Sharon; his sons, Eric and Todd; his daughter-in-law, Lyn, wife of Eric; his grandchildren, Jaryd, Taylor, Trey, and Trinity; his sister, Pam Weisser; his brother, Lee Atkins; and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Mildred Atkins, and his brother-in-law, Ron Weisser.

A viewing will be held at Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Astoria, Oregon for those wishing to pay their respects on Thursday, September 24th from 10am-Noon.
