Roy D Garrison

February 2, 1933 — November 8, 2015

Roy D. Garrison passed away peacefully on Nov. 8, 2015, in Longview, Washington. He was born to James E. and Grace H. Garrison, with his twin brother, on Feb. 23, 1933, in Waverly, Illinois. He was raised in Illinois and Iowa, and as a teenager joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1952. He served in the Army with his twin brother from 1953-1955, where his assignment took him to Europe. Upon returning home he served as a missionary for his church in the California Mission, after which he pursued and obtained a master of fine arts degree from Brigham Young University. He married Judith Lynn Richardson (later divorced) on June 5, 1959, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they had four children; Mark, Kirk, Dayna and Dawna. Roy went on to work as an art teacher at Granite High School and Craft House in Utah before accepting a job offer from Clatsop Community College in the fall of 1969, with the assignment to develop the art department. Roy was very instrumental in growing the college art department and art center. Over the next 37 years, the art program at the college grew under his direction, with a new facility eventually being built to accommodate the demand. He retired in 2006 after 45 years of teaching art history, watercolor, drawing, sculpture and pottery. He also served throughout the years in his church in various capacities, including as bishop. Roy is preceded in death by his parents; James E. Garrison and Grace H. Garrison, as well as an infant sister, Rosetta May Garrison. He is survived by his children: Mark (Lezlie) Garrison of American Fork, Utah; Kirk (Gina) Garrison of St. Helens, Oregon; Dayna (Peter) Ferrero of Boise, Idaho; and Dawna (John) Gillespie of American Fork, Utah; as well as 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Siblings are: Eugene (Rosemary) Garrison of Des Moines, Iowa; William (Nathalie) Garrison of Bountiful, Utah; Valerie Fern Ingalls of Denver, Colorado; Ray (Mary Jean) Garrison of Lehi, Utah; and David (Cecile) Garrison of Burlington, Iowa. A special thank you to Kelly, Tina and especially Nikkol for the exceptional care they provided. Services will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, at 1 p.m. with a viewing one hour prior at 12 p.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 350 Niagara Ave., Astoria, Oregon. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery immediately following the service.
